PORT OF VERACRUZ
VIBRANT PORT CITY, WITNESS TO ONE OF THE MOST SALIENT EPISODES IN HISTORY: THE CONQUEST OF MEXICO
PROGRAM: RUTA DE CORTES
GRADE: SECONDARY-HIGH SCHOOL
PROGRAMS:
"Following the Footsteps of Cortes: Reconstructing the Conquest" (History)
"Social Service" (Structured program based on the needs of the school institution)

JUSTIFICATION:
Veracruz, a city that was the gateway from the West to New Spain, reveals a fascinating historical past where pirates, merchants, monks, slaves, travelers and intellectuals lived facing indomitable sand dunes and fierce winds that lashed out at this inhospitable region, but which was also blessed by beautiful coral reefs.
Despite the challenges of nature, the surrounding marshes, the humidity of the tropics, the suffocating heat and the unhealthiness of the place, Veracruz was forged based on history, identity, music, dance and good humor, learning to live with an aggressive geography, that over the years, man has been able to transform.

Walking through the streets of the port city is to undertake a journey through the history of our country learning to see and understand what is hidden behind the neoclassical facade, behind a customs office, behind the "artificial" Veracruz and behind the remains of this old, walled city.

Walking through the streets of the port is learning to decipher what is hidden in the newly restored alleys, the oldest cafes in the center, the piers where anonymous fishermen meet. Sailors and huge boats come together here that contribute to give Veracruz a particular and bustling atmosphere where ill humor seems non-existent. It is an environment known for "ambiente jarocho", a cheerful atmosphere bathed by music of the Antillean court. There is rumba, danzon, bolero, among other genres, that mark the rhythm of life of the inhabitants of this port city.

Discovering Veracruz is discovering one of the fundamental historical episodes of our history: La Conquista, which begins the birth of a mixed and profoundly diverse culture: the Mexican culture.
Following the Ruta de Cortes we will understand the richness of the process of conquest and colonization. The Port of Veracruz was the scene of contact between the pre-Hispanic, the Antillean and the European. It was a space for cultural and commercial exchange, successive adaptations to an indomitable ecosystem and battles for national sovereignty.
The popular culture of the port, bathed by Antillean rhythms, merges with the rolling of the waves that help give reminder that Mexico is a country of contrasts and fortunate cultural mixing that we must take care of and protect.
