It is located in the central zone of the state of Veracruz. Its name comes from the Nahuatl Xalkomolko: xalli, arena, olla, agujero, depresion; ko, en: In the corner of the sand.
It has one of the best rivers for river descending or rafting in Mexico. It is the La Antigua River, which flows through Jalcomulco into the Gulf of Mexico. In the rapids you can find several levels of difficulty for the experts of this extreme sport. In the high part of the slope is the Grande ravine and the Miguelito river, both of great danger that later join at Puente Pescados.

Other activities in the area are rappelling, rock climbing, hiking, zip-lining, mountain biking, photography, temascal, etc.
